11 Spiritual Truths that Make Life Worth Living

1. We are spiritual beings on a human journey.

We are not human beings having a spiritual experience; we are spiritual beings having a human experience. Everyone is walking a spiritual path, whether they are consciously aware of it or not. Often times people will reflect on when they “started walking a Spiritual Path” or “when I had my Spiritual awakening”…. but I often joke— What was your spirit doing while you were up walking around?! Because if your Spirit had been somewhere else, or was gone altogether, you wouldn’t have been up walking around to arrive at the place where you became conscious of your own spiritual nature.

When have you ever been without your spirit? Who were you before you were spiritual— haven’t you always been both human and Spirit?

2. Our soul knows the way to fulfill our destiny.

Our destiny is to remember who we really are, an energy being of light and love. Energy is who we are, love is where we came from, love is where we return to when we die.

The body expresses and houses the soul for a short period of time, called life, it is the Angel to the Soul while here on earth. At one point in my own spiritual journey, I thought of the Soul as residing in the body, as if the Soul was a little point of light somewhere at the center of my core. But as my awareness has deepened, I understand that the Soul is a much larger energy that reaches out and extends beyond the body into time and space, it is much larger and greater than where the body resides. So I have come to think of the body living within the Soul and the Soul extending beyond the body into the world. The Soul is a timeless energy, where as the body is of this world, this time, this place. The Soul carries the wisdom of our experiences, across time and space, into other dimensions (as we understand them here on earth), and even other worlds.

The light all around you is your Spirit, this is the energy and light of your Soul animated in this plane of time and space— your life! Your Soul is a great light and energy, one that exists beyond time and space, it is all at once the tiniest point of light in the darkness and the entire Light of all there is. You can draw the light of your Spirit and your Soul into the body with your breath or your focus and attention.

It is the Soul that knows the map and geography of your destiny in this body. When you believe that your Spirit knows, and your Soul has the map of your future, then, when you begin to trust your Spirit you will experience a sense of peace that you will fulfill your Soul’s purpose because there is no way for you not to! As long as you are listening, you can trust there is a part of you that knows the way, and where to take you along your journey, but more importantly how you need to get there.

3. Everything is energy.

It’s sometimes easy to forget that everyone and everything is connected. There is no distance between you and the closest rock, the ground underneath your feet, or the person in the car that just went zooming by. Everyone has a spark of Light, deep within, waiting to be fanned by the flame of awakening. There is wisdom in your emotions, they are trying to tell you something, they are trying to get your attention to remind you of who you really are and why you came here.

All living things on earth have consciousness, even rocks and trees. The poet Rumi put it beautifully when he wrote, “Consciousness sleeps in minerals, dreams in plants, wakes up in animals, and becomes self-aware in humans.” Everything has awareness, even if it’s silent or expresses itself in different languages. Just as blossoms on a flower open at their own pace, so too, our souls mature and become aware of their own energy at different times. Everyone and everything is opening to its own awareness on its own timing.

Our bodies, our emotions, our breath, our movements, are all energy and we can begin to understand and be guided by the energies in our lives by sensing and learning how to interpret these feelings. It’s through our focus and attention, movement, emotions and breath that we engage with the world all around us and begin to learn to move the energies. If we choose to center our awareness on any of these things, or all of them, we can help to light the spark of awareness within us that knows we are all connected and can show us the way our Soul has planned for us in this lifetime.

4. We have direct access to our knowingness at all times.

So many of us are afraid of being with ourselves, alone, without distraction. But how can we even know our truth, unless we slow down, and begin to listen to our inner world? When we fear knowing who we really are, we sidestep our own destiny, which leaves us abandoned and desolate in a barren land of our own making. Each of us is here to give something that only we can offer, and when we avoid knowing ourselves, we end up living numb, passionless lives, disconnected from our soul's true purpose.

Dark nights lead to a death of what is known to us and an ultimate birthing of something entirely new. They are not something to be avoided, they are in fact part of the essential process of coming into our awareness as Spiritual beings in our human bodies. Our Souls embodied in this life to grow and expand and cultivate greater capacity for love. Dark nights require tremendous courage to survive, we may quite literally feel like we are dying, and that is in-fact partially true. Our old way of seeing and relating to the world has died, maybe suddenly and unexpectedly, which leaves us crushed in the wake of its leaving. We may mourn this death for sometime, but what we are not to do, is get lost in the darkness. Darkness has its teachings, with our new born eyes and new perceptions we are being guided to new understandings of ourselves and to deepen our relationship to the world around us.

When the inner walls of your Soul’s home are plastered with advertisements, commercials, and the judgments and opinions of everyone you are connected to on social media, turning inward can be a crowded place with not a lot of support for being your true self. Quieting your world so that you can hear and sense your own truth requires that you become conscious of how you spend your time and energy, where you spend your time and energy, and with whom you spend your time and energy.

5. Our words are powerful.

Words are seeds. Words are power. Every time you say a word a seed is planted in yourself, others, and the world. This seed will grow as you continue to use those words. This reminder indicates that it is important to reflect on whether you wish to plants seeds that create sabotaging thoughts, fear, or hate or whether you wish to plant seeds that create hope, love, and inspiration.

How you use words and language indicates your belief systems about the world, and your belief system determines whether you are creator or victim, powerful or disempowered. When we focus on changing our negative self talk or self deprecating tendencies we can begin to live from our highest potential.

There are many ways that we can use words to create blessings, prayers are the words of power we speak aloud or in our hearts when we wish to connect with our highest Self or our connection to all things. It is important to remember that the words we use in our daily life make a difference in what we create for ourselves and for the planet.

6. Healing comes from within you.

Curing is the business of traditional medicine, but healing comes from deep within you. As part of our human journey, we have signed up and agreed to experience numerous challenging cycles in life. Thus, we are always about to enter or are in the process of a transformative cycle of death and rebirth in some area of our life as part of the path of our unique destiny. And as part of our human journey, we each experience numerous cycles of death and rebirth…

What you are seeking is seeking you.

Our heart’s desires are divine impulses meant to motivate us, guide us and inspire us to become the greatest expressions of who we can be. For many of us, these deepest desires have become buried beneath the debris of painful experiences, negative interpretations, fear and resignation. We are often unable to hear, respond to and be fueled by their messages, nudges and prompts to step out of the comfort of the known and into our highest selves.

While challenges are unavoidable and not necessarily a bad thing — it is the place from which we engage these cycles, that determines how difficult it becomes, how long it lasts, and whether we transform the darkness of confusion and pain into the light of new potential and new life… Life is not random, your experiences are meaningful — even your painful experiences— all experiences are a call to the remembering of our Soul’s wisdom.

Most of our major problems, social and environmental, could be solved if enough people shift to a new way of being — a way of being that is true to our own unique reason for being alive at this time and understand how we may offer our gifts to the up leveling of human consciousness and come into harmony with every living thing on planet earth, and the earth itself.

7. Time is an illusion.

The future exists only in our imaginations. Our souls exist in a place of “no time”. Time is part of our human experience of life on this earth, as is aging and the grace that comes with the passing of time. Going within is the key to returning to the place of “no time” where all the answers lie. When you surrender to a higher wisdom and higher goal, the divine plan of your life will unfold, naturally in perfect timing.

Because of our Spiritual and physical makeup, the present is the only point from which the past or the future can be changed, the point of the present is the only place where any action can become effective towards a different reality. I am not speaking metaphorically, in the most intimate of terms, your past and future are modified by your present reactions.

8. We are never alone.

We could not exist here without our Spirit. Who is the one breathing your breath? Is that you? Who is behind the breath? Where does the energy of your being come from the breath, or the life behind the breath? We are always connected to our higher selves, and have the help from the Ancestors, our Spirit Guides, and the energies who made agreements with our Souls to help steer us on the path toward the goal of awakening to love. They are always with us and are waiting patiently for us to ask for help. We live in a state of free will and so they cannot interfere with our free will, but if we ask with intention for our highest good they do have creative ways of helping guide us on our path in perfect timing.

Most guidance comes from within— through a process of intuition and listening, sometimes you may hear a voice that sounds wiser than your own, or you may get an idea in your head that seems inspired. These messages can be subtle or loud, but neither or more or less powerful than the other. It is important to hone your intuition and hearing so that you can hear your internal guidance that is leading the way to the answer of your prayers.

Messages can also come from other people, in words that they speak or gestures that remind us of someone or something important to us, messages can also be received through seemingly random acts of coincidence, a billboard sign, a magazine left open on a table with words that speak directly to your heart, and also from nature all around us.

9. The unlived life is the greatest loss.

Self doubt and fear can hold many of us trapped for years and years, and never allow you to change. If you want to create the life you want to experience then you need to begin to tap into your inner wisdom and learn to source your unique power and soul gifts.

However, it is a myth that we figure it out first and then we move on what we know. I spent years saying: If I just knew what I was supposed to be doing, I'd be doing it. And so I spent years, waiting for my life to begin... It was not until I started doing things that made me feel alive, like I was really living, and life was worth living that everything began to change. Not because I knew how it was going to go from there, or even where I was going to go, or where I was going to end up, but my "life purpose" began to reveal itself underneath my feet and the path that I was walking began to make sense, one step at a time... one step, then another, then another.

The greatest loss is the unlived life. We are sent into the world to live to the fullest and experience everything that comes toward us and everything that awakens us. It is said that our desires are the keys to unlock our unique destiny. What we seek is causing us to seek.

10. We are not responsible to convince others of our own truth.

Understanding what it means to love, ourselves and others, and becoming more loving is the most important thing we can do as humans. We come from a source of unconditional love and light, it is the spark from this source that brings us into being, and that we carry within ourselves. We are part of source and can never be disconnected from that infinite source of love and light from where we came and where we will return. We only cover it over and forget our true essence and nature, learning to love ourselves unconditionally is the key to returning to our natural state of being. Forgiveness becomes the power that frees your heart from that moment on. We are love and therefore we are that we seek.

You don’t have to convince anyone of who you are. You don’t have to convince anyone of anything, they too are a spiritual being. Becoming a lighthouse of your own truth is the best medicine for yourself, for those around you, and for the world. Silently bless the world with your love and light wherever you go and to whomsoever you meet. This way, whether anyone is interested in your spiritual journey or not, they won’t be able to avoid benefiting from your radiance and who you are being in the world.

11. Love is why we're here.

Before you arrived here, the dream of your individuality was carefully planned. You were sent in the shape of destiny in which you would be able to express the special gift that you and only you can bring to the world. If someone else could fulfill your destiny, then they would be in your place, and you would not be here.

Sometimes your life may involve suffering and pain that can neither be accounted for nor explained. I've learned that forgiveness is the gateway to a more expansive life and the way to joy. Happiness is usually the result of having a meaningful life, not what makes life worth living in itself. I am learning that death is just as much a process, with its own unique time frame and cycle, as is life—with it’s own unique process and own unique rhythms ... I believe we all go through cycles of dying and being reborn again. There is a space in between these cycles that feels like emptiness, or sometimes like being lost... but if we know this is just part of the process and that we are being emptied in order to be filled again, then we don’t have to feel so afraid.

Every-thing and every-one is connected and comes from an infinite source of love. When we understand this, we can begin to fathom why we are where we are and how to change our circumstances, in turn by transforming our own lives we offer new energy to the world around us that shapes and reforms not just our own life, but the world’s destiny.

We are born of love, made of energy, and connected by luminous and spiritual web of divine making.

I hope you enjoy this list I've been collecting and reflecting upon for the last couple of years... ☺️ I would like to acknowledge that I’ve had a draft of this list working for years, and though I’ve put this list together, by no means am I the only person who has come to these awarenesses. I attribute especially my understanding of Soul and Spirit to the body of work of John O’Donohue, Irish poet and philosopher, who’s writings I have revisited countless times over the course of my own life. One of my first spiritual teachers at age 23, Caroline Myss, continues to be as relevant as ever 20 years later and her body of work and writing on energy was and remains foundational in my work, she continues to put out important material. I attribute my awareness of time and its illusion to the Seth teachings— specifically “The Nature of Personal Reality”. My Mother thought I was quoting the Beatles in this list, and although it didn’t occur to me at the time, I’d like to acknowledge my Mother’s influences and insights, as well as her favorite band “The Beatles” and especially John Lennon as influencers of my understanding of things that make life worth living.

40 Ways to be Happier with Less

Be who you want, Inspiring, LaughChloë Rain1 Comment

In honor of life, adventure, the pursuit of happiness, and in celebration of my birthday I add one item to this list each year and share the things that have changed my life at depth.

  1. Climb a mountain, even a small one. Get up to a place where you can see life from a different perspective... take a breath, look around, enjoy the view.

  2. Pause, take a moment to remind yourself how far you've come. Think about how un-clever you once were, think about some of the silly things you used to think and believe about yourself and realize how you don't think that way anymore... Give yourself some kudos for being a ever evolving human being.

  3. Get caught in the rain. Purposely get wet when it's raining, because you want to. Don't run from the rain, embrace it, in your own present way. Notice how you feel.

  4. Go to your local used bookstore or library that sells used books for a $1 and pick up a book that catches your attention. Buy the book and know you've just contributed to the health of the planet by recycling that book. Flip through the pages like shuffling cards, open it to a page, read what it has to say. Maybe its meaningful, maybe its not. It doesn't matter, you paid a dollar for it. Play like you're asking the magic 8 ball for a message every time you shuffle the pages.

  5. Ponder, does all life having meaning? No matter how difficult life gets, is it worth it?

  6. Pick flowers for your home or your beside table. I used to buy a dozen roses for myself every week at my local grocery store, when the blossoms started to wilt, I would go to the beach or go on a hike and I would say a prayer on every single rose petal and toss them one by one into the water. I would imagine the thousands of prayers I have spoken and released over the years all floating around.  Watch a video about this ceremony. When money was tight and flowers were not part of my budget, I would go to my local park at sunset and pick flowers, or steal a blossom from a blooming tree on one of my neighborhood walks. {Be considerate of your neighbors gardens, always be mindful, don't take too much and always send gratitude to your source. Tread lightly on the earth... I have picked flowers on the side of the road, or flowers sticking out of sidewalks in the city...}

  7. Lay in bed for a few minutes longer in the morning. Enjoy the comfort of your bed, and the beauty of rest and sleep, notice that today is indeed a completely new day. You will never live this day again, you have never lived this day before. What good things may come?

  8. Listen to the bird songs. Become curious. Why do they sing? Who do they sing for?

  9. Treat yourself regularly to small simple treats. Like a root beer float or orange tic-tacs at the grocery store checkout line. Or stop off at the road side produce stand and buy a ripe peach, just because you can.

  10. Give gifts regularly, they could be small anonymous gifts, like paying for someone's expiring parking meter or an extra generous tip at your favorite coffee shop. Or even things like shells or stones that made you stop and pick them up. Whatever the sentiment, it's nice to know you can always give from the heart, and that's what will be received.

  11. Look people in the eye while you're checking out, no matter if you're at the gas station, the sandwich shoppe, or the dentist. See what they're saying with their eyes.

  12. Write note cards to people who pop into your mind and send them, just thinking of you.

  13. Go on regular picnics.  Even when my budget went from expensive bottles of Sancerre and exotic cheeses to 2 Buck Chuck and $2 end samples from the cheese bin at Whole Foods, regular picnics have always been a rich treat for sky gazing, contemplation, grounding and centering.

  14. Have a soundtrack to your life— make a playlist of your favorite songs, or songs that inspire you, make you feel better, or lift your spirits.  Give your sound track a name like "Almost Famous"  or "Magical Mystery Tour" or "Superfly" or "Pretty in Pink" or whatever character you imagine or fantasize yourself playing in this great play called life.

  15. Roll the windows down sometimes. When you're in the passenger side, hang your head out the window (safely), or your feet, or just do that thing with your arm and your fingers like you're making a wave as the wind gushes underneath your wing.

  16. Do something that you were supposed to do when you were a child or a teenager, but never did because you weren't cool enough, or you didn't want to make a fool of yourself. You're cool enough now. And even if you're not, who fucking cares? You're an adult, you can do whatever you want, even the uncool stuff. (The first time I learned to skate board was my 37 birthday ☺️.)

  17. Save a picture to your screen saver, either on your phone or computer that symbolizes something you want for yourself. For several months I had a picture of a couple kissing in front of the pyramid at the Louvre, for some reason this symbolized true romance to me at the time.... I didn't know it yet, but within less than 6 months I would be having my own love affair in Paris. I realized later that I had programmed myself for that potential reality in my life.

  18. Take baths regularly. Like real baths, in the tub style. This goes for you men, too.

  19. Downsize your life.

  20. Think about how relatively big your current house is compared to the majority of people who live on this planet. Consider living in a smaller house, and yet feeling like you have more space in your life, more freedom, more expansiveness.

  21. Think about a teacher in school who made an impact on your life and realize what they were up against in their personal life to make the decision to be a school teacher, perhaps feel grateful they listened to their calling and were there to help you, despite their own personal sacrifices.

  22. Don't take yourself too seriously.

  23. You didn't fail that bad, it wasn't as fatal as you thought.

  24. People already forgot.

  25. Don't keep putting your happiness off into the future. Even if you hate your life right now, try to find one thing that is hilarious enough for you to laugh at yourself, so that you can find the good of still being alive.

  26. Make something to share with others, bake bread or cookies, or make beer, something you want to eat, later, eventually. See what happens when you put effort into making something you will invite someone to eat or drink with you.

  27. Build a fire, in a fireplace, a fire pit, a campfire, or on the beach. Learn what it takes to make a good fire.

  28. Realize your connectedness to everything around you, then expand your realization to how connected you are to the people in your life. Just by thinking of them you are connected to them.

  29. Re-connect to something that you put aside a long time a go, be it a childhood passion or a teenage obsession. Think about what you loved to do as a kid and then go and do that... See how you feel. Is there anything you’ve been wanting to do for a while but you haven’t made time for it? NOW IS THE TIME.

  30. Make time to be by yourself. Even just a few minutes during the day can help you connect to yourself rather than being caught up in outside forces.

  31. Write down the things that you truly value. Go back to this list regularly… update the list. Check on this list to see if the things you are doing and spending your time on are in alignment with the things you say you truly value.

  32. Answer the phone when your friend calls, they may be holding the vision for you of your greatness, when you can't see the forest for the trees.

  33. Go on mundane adventures, at least once weekly. Often times we think we have to plan something big, or an adventure takes money and time we don't have. But when you set a goal to explore somewhere once a week, be it in your neighborhood, or a short drive from your home, or even a walk in a different direction outside your house, you do not know what is waiting for your on the other side of intentional awareness. A whole new world.

  34. Fantasize about an amazing sexual encounter you dream of having. Let yourself feel completely satisfied in the end.

  35. When you wake up in the morning drink one beautiful, cool but not cold glass of clean water. Before you drink the water look into the glass and imagine that you are filling the glass with pure love, and that the water is pure and loving energy. Drink the glass of water like you are drinking a glass full of love potion.

  36. Introduce yourself to new music, regularly, especially go and see live music in small venues. Listen to the lyrics, let the music make your body move... allow yourself to "look silly" dancing, just so you remember how it feels to dance. There are no rules here, no directions needed.

  37. Make something just because. Create something, or do something just for the sake of self-expression. Write, draw, create, paint, cook, make love, make love to yourself. Allow it all to be ok.

  38. Remind yourself how important YOUR LIFE IS. Make sticky notes that remind you of the importance of being you and that let you know that you are special and unique.  Set reminders on your phone with your values, or things that you intend to be, or to experience in your life.

  39. You are a DIVINE HUMAN BEING. There is no other speck of stardust in the Universe just like you. No one else thinks your thoughts, feels your feelings, or has your desires, or is capable of doing the things you want to do, in the way that you and only you can do them.

  40. You are an individual expression of multiverse life force creation energy. Never forget the source of your power. There is NO ONE else in all the Universes like you.

  41. What they say is true… you are never too old to change your life. Writing you from my new home on Tromsø Island… about 200 miles into the Arctic Circle of Norway.. sharing with you some images from my impromptu birthday adventure to Sommarøy below… Sunset on another year around the sun!

The way to find out who you are is not by comparing yourself with others, but by looking to see whether you are fulfilling your own potential in the best way you know how.
— Osho
You’ll never look back, but you’ll never be the same. In a good way... but its wild to realize that you don’t stay the same, everything you thought you were goes away, then the real you shows up, and you don’t even know her... but you like her
— Chloë Rain
Do not be too timid and squeamish about your actions. All life is an experiment. The more experiments you make the better. What if they are a little coarse, and you may get your coat soiled or torn? What if you do fail, and get fairly rolled in the dirt once or twice? Up, again, you shall never be so afraid of a tumble.
— Ralph Waldo Emerson
