Drumming Is More Effective than Antidepressants, Study Suggests

Shamanic Drum Journey, Health Mind Happy SoulGuest Writer

As our scientific and cultural understanding of mental health continues to progress, finding solutions for people struggling with depression become increasingly important. Long gone are the days when people who were struggling with mental health issues were locked up in prison-like asylums. However, modern drugs can often have a similarly oppressive effect on sufferers, as people’s emotional responses are numbed and they become unable to experience highs as well as lows.

These drugs are often thrown around without caution, and they fail to acknowledge the circumstances behind the individual’s depressive state. They attempt to treat the symptoms rather than the root cause. A group of UK-based researchers seems to have found an unlikely cure – group drumming.

The study, which was conducted earlier this year, worked with a group of 30 adults who were already being treated for depression but had refused the use of antidepressants. The participants were split into two groups, one being assigned a 90-minute group drumming session once a week and the control group enrolling in quiz nights and other social activities. All drumming sessions were conducted on traditional African djembe drums, with the group sat together in a circle.

The ten-week study involved participants who were matched exactly regarding their ethnicity, gender, age and employment status. Over the course of the ten weekly observations, the groups were monitored psychologically and physically for signs of depression. The results were overwhelming!

After ten weeks the drumming group had significantly improved their mental health. There was a clear reduction in depression and anxiety, as well as a vast improvement in the social resilience of each individual involved. Physically, every member of the drumming group shifted from a pro-inflammatory immune profile to anti-inflammatory. The study proved both the benefits of communal drumming and the link between mental health and underlying inflammatory immune responses.

The control group saw very minimal improvements and in the follow-up tests three months later; the drumming group had maintained their improved state of mental health. One theory as to why the drumming circle works is that the activity of producing music, alongside the sense of community that the circle gave the participants, led to an increased feeling of fulfillment and gave them something to look forward to each week.

The reason for the vast improvement is open for debate. However, the results are indisputable. The ancient art of group drumming helps people with depression and boosts your health. These findings and other associated research could continue to alter the way we view and treat mental health issues.

It is a move towards a future where doctors recommend drug-free solutions that treat us all as individuals rather than treating mental health sufferers as broken cogs in the machine.  A future set to the rhythmic sound of drums.

The drum, sometimes called the shaman’s horse, provides a simple and effective way to induce ecstatic trance states. When a drum is played at an even tempo of three to four beats per second for at least fifteen minutes, most novices report that they can journey successfully even on their first attempt.

Shamanic journeying may be undertaken for purposes of divination and for personal healing. Its a way of communicating with your inner guidance and spirit self and receiving information.

Your inner self is in constant communication with all aspects of your environment, seen and unseen. You need only journey within to find answers to your questions.

Why Engaging In Work You Love Could Save Your Life

Be who you want, Healing, Health Mind Happy Soul, Life LessonsLissa Rankin
You are a badass motherfucking sorcerer of divine light.jpg

You probably know that having a toxic job that stresses you out and sucks the soul out of you isn’t exactly good for you. As a physician who has experienced work stress myself, as well as witnessing it in my patients, it’s obvious to me that work stress is poisonous and can translate into physical symptoms. You know this already. Anyone who has ever gotten a migraine after a deal went bad or stiff shoulders after the boss criticized him can attest to that.

But did you realize that work stress can actually kill you?

In Japan, they even have a word for it – karoshi – which is defined as “death by overwork.” Karoshi usually happens to relatively young, otherwise healthy people who are burning the candle at both ends in a less-than-dreamy work environment.

The first case of karoshi was reported in 1969, when a worker died of a stroke at the age of 29. But it wasn’t until 1987 that the Japan Ministry of Labor began collecting statistics on karoshi. Since that time, Japanese officials estimate that approximately 10,000 cases of karoshi occur each year.

This should be big news! Some lawyers and scholars even claim that the number of karoshi deaths in Japan equals or exceeds the number of traffic accident fatalities each year. But when was the last time your doctor added “Alleviate work stress” to your preventive maintenance or treatment plan?

What Happens Physiologically When People Die of Karoshi?

Karoshi is not a single disease. It’s a constellation of what are believed to be stress-induced physiological changes that usually lead to either sudden cardiac death or stroke, most likely caused by repetitive triggering of the “fight-or-flight” stress response that activates the sympathetic nervous system, raises blood pressure and heart rate, and overstresses the cardiovascular system.

Just before dying, most karoshi victims complain of varying combinations of dizziness, nausea, severe headache and stomach ache. In 95% of karoshi cases, death occurs within 24 hours of the onset of severe symptoms, though milder symptoms sometimes precede the severe ones. (If you’re stressed at work, do any of these symptoms sound familiar to you? If so, listen up. That’s your body telling you your work could be harming your health.)

Death by Overwork in the United States

It’s not just the Japanese who are working themselves to death. Although most of the data on karoshi comes from Japan, the International Labor Office released statistics showing that the United States far exceeds the Japanese when it comes to overwork. Our doctors and our government have yet to recognize karoshi as a distinct disease or award workman’s compensation benefits the way the Japanese do, and because we don’t track it, it’s hard to say how frequently work stress manifests as death in the United States. But you can bet it affects the health of many.

One study found that one in five Americans came to work, whether they were ill, injured, or seeing a doctor that day. The same sort of work obsession keeps about a third of employed Americans failing to use accrued vacation time. This failure to use accrued vacation time has actually been proven to predispose to early death. One study, published in Psychosomatic Medicine in 2000, looked at 12,000 men over nine years and found that those who failed to take annual vacations had a 21% higher risk of death from all causes, and they were 32% more likely to die of a heart attack. Yikes!

It’s not just early death that work stress can cause. Another recent study found that disenchanted, burned out employees developed heart disease at a 79% higher rate than those who liked their job.

And there are financial costs to all this burn out! The New York Times reports that health issues related to job stress costs the American economy $200 billion annually – roughly the economic cost of Hurricane Katrina. It is an epidemic that just might be affecting… you.

How Your Toxic Job Can Harm Your Body

You probably know that work stress isn’t good for you, and you probably know that if you hate your job, stress reduction would be a plus. But do you understand how work stress harms the body?

Here’s how it goes. Your boss yells at you when you did nothing wrong, and you get pissed. Or you’re on the floor of the stock market – or in front of a jury – screaming until you’re red in the face. Or you’re up all night, faced with the repetitive stress of performing a perfect surgery when you’re exhausted, like I did for over a decade. Or someone steals your idea and doesn’t give you credit. Or your job requires you to try to sell cigarettes – and when you do, you also sell out your integrity.

You keep quiet when you want to speak up. You lack the power to make the change you know needs to happen. You’re trying to please an office full of narcissists. Or whatever.

Sound The Alarm

It doesn’t matter what the stressor is. All that matters is that the amygdala in your lizard brain reads “THREAT!” and signals the alarm that lets your brain know you are in danger, probably because a tiger is chasing you. Your amygdala isn’t very smart. It doesn’t really listen to your intelligent forebrain and fails to realize that your boss isn’t actually a man-eating tiger. (Or maybe she is…)

Either way, your amygdala sounds the alarm and the “fight-or-flight” physiological stress response is triggered, flipping on your sympathetic nervous system, exposing every cell to harmful stress hormones like cortisol and epinephrine, elevating your heart rate and blood pressure, and worst of all – deactivating the body’s natural self-repair mechanisms, the ones that kill cancer cells, fight infections, repair broken proteins, slow aging, and help you live to be a hundred.

The Relaxation Response

Fortunately, your body has a natural counterbalance to the potentially poisonous stress response, which Dr. Herbert Benson famously named the relaxation response, which is also the title of his bestselling book from the 1970’s. The relaxation response shuts off the stress response, turns on the parasympathetic nervous system, and flips on the body’s self-repair mechanisms so the body can do what it does best – heal itself.

Follow Your Visionary Dreams

So if you think work stress might be putting your health at risk, what can you do?

As it turns out, the most effective way to optimize the health of your body is to reduce stress responses. The average American has over 50 stress responses per day, often caused by work stress.

But what if you were doing work you really loved? When you love your work like I do and you’re feeling a sense of mission and purpose, helping other people with the work you do, staying in alignment with your integrity, feeling a sense of personal power in an entrepreneurial business, working with people you admire, and expressing your creative gifts, you naturally experience fewer stress responses – and the body’s self-repair mechanisms have a chance to do their business.

What If You Can’t Quit Your Soul-Sucking Job?

Still mired in the cubicle or married to the golden handcuffs? Don’t worry. In Mind Over Medicine: Scientific Proof That You Can Heal Yourself, I walk you through the 6 Steps To Healing Yourself that include not only how to reduce stress responses, but very specific actions you can take to activate more relaxation responses – things like meditation, laughter, playing with animals, hanging out with friends, getting a massage, doing yoga, attending services as part of a spiritual community, giving to others, or hugging someone.

Ultimately, it’s all about the ratio between stress responses and relaxation responses in the body, so if you can’t reduce stress responses, you can still add relaxation responses – and my book will teach you how to do that.

The Law of the Twinkie: Spiritual Enlightenment & Personal Freedom

Health Mind Happy Soul, Learning to Love Yourself, Life LessonsChloë RainComment

You eat Twinkies and you know they're not good for you, deep down inside you know.....

But you like eating twinkies and so you stay for a while in a state of confusion. You eat twinkies all the time. You think you love twinkies, twinkies make you feel satiated.

But deep down inside you know, something's not right.

One day you're feeling particularly bad about your eating of the Twinkies and so you start to get curious.

You educate yourself on nutrition and you are aware that the combination of flour and sugar has no nutritional value and is high in calories, but you still eat the twinkies.

Then doing more research you become aware that in fact there are worse ingredients in the Twinkies and that you like to numb yourself by eating the twinkies and you feel addicted to the twinkies. But you still eat the Twinkies.

Then you become aware that you numb yourself with food and you feel out of control of your craving because there is an emotional response trigger to not feeling comfortable in your body, so you eat to numb yourself and feel shame around your eating.

But you still eat the twinkies. Then you become aware that you started eating to numb yourself because you were violated as a child and it wasn't safe or comfortable to be in your body, so over eating protects you from being seen, protects you from being violated, numbs you from feeling the emotions in your body.

Now every time you go to eat the twinkie you have a new insight about the choice you are making and you start to realize that it's really not about the twinkie, it's about how you feel inside your body and what emotions are attached to eating.

From this awareness, you can realize that the twinkie does not have power over you, the twinkie is not smarter than you, and you know that really what is occurring is an emotional trigger that you don't feel safe, you don't want to be seen, and you want to numb out in your body.

From this place of awareness, you may still eat the twinkie.... the more you do the work the more clearing of the emotional trigger, the less and less the twinkie has power over your choices.

Then one day, it hits you. You no longer want the twinkie. You want to like yourself and feel good in your body. You start making different choices. You start to see the benefits of eating things that make you feel good about your choices instead of the twinkies, one day you even realize you enjoy eating things that make you feel good more than you have ever enjoyed eating twinkies.

Twinkies don’t totally disappear from your life, and every time you come up against the Twinkie you have to make the choice.
— The Law of the Twinkie

You start to feel better in your body. One choice at at time, you start to feel better. If one day you eat the twinkie, ok, no big deal, next time you have the opportunity to make an entirely new and fresh choice.

The key is that the twinkie no longer rules your life and your every decision. You are in control of your choices.

You start to trust yourself.

Then One Day you realize many days have passed since you even thought of Twinkies, and you laugh at how silly and insignificant the Twinkie really is, and how powerful you have become.

In love and service,-logo-black (2).png

Awareness is the key to making a different choice. Having awareness is 90% of what is needed to make changes. It is what you do with the awareness is what makes the difference.

How the Practice of Loving Kindness Will Change Your Life

How Loving Kindness Can Change Your Life
You have to keep breaking your heart until it opens.
— Rumi

When I left Seattle, my exit was abrupt and overshadowed by a breakup — it had felt like fleeing under the cover of night and a dark cloud of shame — for a long time a part of me held onto an idea that I'd return shortly and resume my beautiful life there.

My heart ached for the energy of the place and the spirit of the mountains that had permeated my soul and had become part of the life force that pumps through my veins with every minute. It was as if my soul and my body longed for the connection with those mountains and the places that had been integral in my heart opening to the beauty of living.

On my way back to the east coast, I had spent most of my cross country flight crying my eyes out and writing in my journal. I was feeling sadness, yes, but mainly deep gladness and deeper gratefulness for my life experience and all the people who had graced my path and relationships that had changed me at depth.

The city, the lush green and the deep waters had healed me, soothed me, and taught me things about myself I hadn't known.

Though as I said goodbye, I had understood that something else was pulling me forward into the future, the next big adventure....

I was grieving and simultaneously grateful, attempting to resist the reaction to cling to the past and beg for things to be different than they are.

We flew into bad weather as we neared the east coast and I arrived in the Charlotte airport only minutes after the last plane had departed that could take me to the rural airport near my birth home. It was almost 11pm and I feared spending the night in the airport after a very emotional day of crying and grieving.

Several hundred passengers had been grounded or had missed their connecting flights because of bad weather.  The mob quickly began to swarm and anger pulsed through the crowded airport. I quickly turned my awareness from my own sadness to the swelling anger of the crowd and as the passengers' complaints began to get louder, I began to practice loving kindness.

I connect to Source, fill up my energy field, and then radiate love from the core of my being through mindfulness and detached intention.

I use the practice of loving kindness or Metta daily. On normal days, on lonely days, on days I feel great, sometimes all day, throughout the day, and in stressful situations it has an especially positive effect on the external circumstances around you.

The practice of loving kindness is the tool I use to release worry, self-doubt, and it is how I learned to heal myself from decades of depression.

As the aggravation levels skyrocketed I blasted feel good rock and roll in my ear buds drowning out the sounds around me and radiating as much love as my tender heart could muster into the crowds.

Arriving at the USAirways re-ticketing counter I spoke softly to the lady at the counter, sending her compassion from my heart. She quickly handed me a voucher for the nights stay, rebooked my flight for the next day and ushered me to the shuttle to the Woodlawn Courtyard. I silently blessed her and then thanked her warmly out loud as the next customer approached her irately complaining "how unacceptable everything was".

After a smooth shuttle ride to the Courtyard, I shuddered thinking of how many Courtyards across the United States I had helped renovate in my previous life as a project manager for hotel development. Walking into the very familiar surroundings, I recognized the layout, the furniture, down to the carpet and fabric scheme, the pictures on the wall and even laughed out loud recognizing that it was the "yellow flowers theme" and recalling with humor what a pain-in-the ass that wall mural is to install correctly.

I was greeted at the front desk by the manager, Stacey, it was well after midnight, and when she asked me how I was doing? I responded honestly, that I was feeling very human, heart broken, and that today had been an emotional day, with an unexpected nights stay in Charlotte.

Then Stacey came out from behind the desk and gave me a hug. Tears came to my eyes, because of her sincere desire to comfort me and my ability to receive this kindness from a perfect stranger.

I hadn't eaten all day, and as I retrieved a frozen dinner from the Courtyard food market, Stacey waived me through and gifted me my dinner and a bottle of wine saying "You're all taken care of my dear".

I hugged her a second time and sent blessings of love to her, her family, everyone she encountered, and to Courtyard Marriot of all things!

I have laughed many times thinking of how different my life has become and of the person I used to be. In all of my professional glory and fierce personal boundaries, I would never in a million years have been able to hug the manager at the Courtyard front desk and shed tears of gratitude, while feeling my own raw and open heart.

I am grateful for the practice of loving kindness and for the person that I have become through this practice.

I am grateful for the depth of emotion that I feel on a daily basis and the ability to shed tears while blessing the human race and all those suffering and in heartache.

I am home now in my heart.

A little loving kindness and human compassion can go a long way.

A little love and kindness could just save the world.

Here is an easy introduction to the practice of loving kindness, a prayer for you:

The Love & Light Prayer

Love & Light
Love & Light
I Send Love & Light

Love & Light
Love & Light
I Speak Love & Light

Love & Light
Love & Light
I Breathe Love & Light

Love & Light
Love & Light
I AM Love & Light

Love & Light
Love & Light
I Radiate Love & Light

May all your adventures unfold perfectly before your eyes in ways you could never have imagined, may you make friends along the way that surprise and change you at depth, like coming home, but not to a home you’ve ever known before. When the next adventure comes to usher you forward may you be full and happy, having enjoyed every experience as if your life was a great feast and you got drunk on the punch and ate too much food the for the soul.....
— Chloë Rain

The Philosophy and Practice of Universal Love: Metta

The Pali word metta is a multi-significant term meaning loving-kindness, friendliness, goodwill, benevolence, fellowship, amity, concord, inoffensiveness and non-violence. The Pali commentators define metta as the strong wish for the welfare and happiness of others (parahita-parasukha-kamana).

Essentially metta is an altruistic attitude of love and friendliness as distinguished from mere amiability based on self-interest. Through metta one refuses to be offensive and renounces bitterness, resentment and animosity of every kind, developing instead a mind of friendliness, accommodativeness and benevolence which seeks the well-being and happiness of others.

True metta is devoid of self-interest. It evokes within a warm-hearted feeling of fellowship, sympathy and love, which grows boundless with practice and overcomes all social, religious, racial, political and economic barriers. Metta is indeed a universal, unselfish and all-embracing love.

How To Stay Healthy Even If You Eat Junk, Smoke Ciggies, Skip Exercise & Booze It Up

How To Stay Healthy Even If You Eat Junk, Smoke Ciggies, Skip Exercise & Booze It Up

Ever since doctors started teaching people the importance of smoking cessation, moderation in alcohol intake, a nutritious, mostly plant-based diet, daily exercise, and weight control, millions of people have been beating themselves up for unhealthy lifestyle habits.  Yet the guilt and shame so many feel hasn’t led to significant improvements in the health of the general public. Even though people know how to live a “healthy” lifestyle, most choose not to. Instead, rates of diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure, heart disease, and other largely preventable diseases are on the rise.

Bummer.

While lots of people rattle off about the importance of healthy lifestyle modifications – and as a green-juicing, exercising, non-smoking, health food junkie, I agree with them – what shocks me is how few are talking about the other critical factors that contribute to health and longevity – the factors that are arguably even more important than diet, cigarette use, alcohol intake, weight, and exercise.

Some Diseases Are Preventable

Before I share with you these factors that may shock you, let me start with a hat tip to conventional medical wisdom. Yes, some diseases are largely preventable. If you’re a 3 pack-a-day smoker who winds up with lung cancer, you’re probably feeling pretty crappy about your cancer because you know that if you had never smoked, you probably wouldn’t have been saddled with that disease. If you’ve been eating at McDonalds every day, it won’t surprise you if a heart attack knocks you flat and you have to get bypass surgery. If you’ve been boozing it up for three decades and you wind up with cirrhosis of the liver, well… not to be harsh, but you knew that might happen, right? If you’re four hundred pounds and you get diabetes, um… need I say more?

Yes, if we aim to lead optimally healthy lives, diet, exercise, weight control, alcohol intake, and cigarette use matter.

Some Unhealthy People Live To Be 100

But let’s face it. Some smoking, boozing, overweight, junk food binging couch potatoes stay healthy and die of old age. As a physician, these people have always blown me away. How are their bodies so resilient to such poisons? Is it genetic? Is it just dumb luck? These people left me scratching my head, until I was doing the research for my book Mind Over Medicine: Scientific Proof You Can Heal Yourself (Hay House, 2013).

Clearly, there are many factors contributing to why one person winds up sick when another stays healthy, in spite of poor health habits. The same is true for the health nut who is doing everything “right” but still winds up sick.

So what are these factors that your doctor probably isn’t discussing with you?

Loving Community Equals Health

Let me start by telling you a story.

Once upon a time, a tribe of Italian immigrants crossed the Atlantic and settled in Roseto, Pennsylvania, where they didn’t exactly live the most “healthy” lifestyle. They ate meatballs fried in lard, smoked like chimneys, boozed it up every night, and pigged out on pasta and pizza. Yet, shockingly, they had half the rate of heart disease and much lower rates of many other illnesses than the national average. It wasn’t the water they drank, the hospital they went to, or their DNA. And clearly, it wasn’t their stellar diet. So what was it that made the people of Roseto so resistant to heart disease?

One physician, baffled by their low rates of heart disease, studied the townspeople to determine why they were so protected.

The Effects of Loneliness On The Body

What his researchers found is that the tight knit community living in multi-generational homes and enjoying communal dinners and frequent festivities provided solace from the loneliness so many people feel. The love and support of others in the close knit community alleviated the stress and overwhelm many lonely people feel. Researchers posit that the stress lonely people feel, which increases cortisol levels and activates the sympathetic nervous system, raising heart rate, elevating blood pressure, incapacitating the immune system, and increasing the risk of heart disease, is responsible for much of the illness lonely people experience.

Because the people of Roseto never felt alone, they rarely died of heart disease – most died of “old age”- even though they smoked, ate poorly, and drank.  As it turns out, alleviation of loneliness is preventative medicine, and the scientific data suggests that loneliness is a stronger risk factor for illness than smoking or failure to exercise.

Why One Person Gets Sick & Another Stays Healthy

It’s not just loneliness that contributes to whether you get sick or stay healthy. As I discussed in my TEDx talk, it’s not just your relationships that affect your health – it’s work stress, financial stress, mental health issues like depression and anxiety, whether you’re optimistic or pessimistic, and whether or not you’re actively engaging in potentially stress reducing activities like creative expression, sex, and spiritual activities like prayer, attending religious services, or meditation.

For example, let’s take one person who eats poorly, smokes, and never exercises, but who enjoys an incredible marriage, a great family, fabulous friends, a rewarding and financially lucrative job, a sense of life purpose, a healthy spiritual life, a blossoming creative life, and a kickin’ sex life.  Aside from the cloud of smoke infusing the lungs with toxins and the poisons this person’s body is ingesting, this kind of lifestyle has been scientifically proven to result in better health than the lonely individual in an emotionally abusive marriage, with a soul-sucking job, no sex life, an absent spiritual life, and no creative outlets. The scientific data suggests that the “unhealthy” individual with an otherwise healthy, balanced life is more likely to live a long, healthy life than a nonsmoking, abstaining vegan with a personal trainer who is unhealthy and miserable in all other facets of life.

Make sense?

How to Treat Anxiety & Depression Without Medication

How to Treat Anxiety & Depression without Medication

It’s normal to feel a little apprehensive from time to time. Let’s face it–life can be stressful. All of us worry about things like financial problems, work, family struggles, or health. But sometimes anxiety can become so severe that completing simple, everyday tasks is difficult. When this occurs, it may be a sign of generalized anxiety disorder.

People with generalized anxiety disorder worry about many things, even when there is little reason to worry. Their stress level is so high that it interferes with their relationships and day-to-day activities.

Anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness in America. Approximately 6.8 million adults suffer from generalized anxiety disorder and women are twice as likely to be affected as men.  It often starts during adolescence and symptoms tend to magnify during stressful periods in life.

Signs of Anxiety in Women

  • Constant feelings of worry and tension
  • Worrying about simple, everyday tasks
  • Inability to relax
  • Unrealistic view of problems
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Restlessness and being “on edge” or easily startled
  • Feeling tired all the time
  • Irritability and mood swings
  • Difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep
  • Frequent headaches
  • Depression symptoms
  • Muscle tension, aches and body pains
  • Trembling or twitching
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Sweating
  • Feeling light-headed or short of breath
  • Stomach pains and nausea
  • Feeling the need to go to the bathroom frequently

Medications to Treat Anxiety

Common medications used to treat generalized anxiety disorder include benzodiazepines such as Xanax, Valium, and Ativan. The problem with these medications is that they are highly addictive. When a person becomes dependent on these chemicals, they can develop further psychological and physical distress as well as experience withdrawal symptoms if they stop taking the medicine. Sometimes, antidepressants are prescribed to treat chronic anxiety and panic attacks. These medications include Paxil, Effexor, Prozac, Lexapro, and Zoloft. However, these medications can cause a slew of side effects and often are ineffective.[2]

Lavender Reduces Signs of Anxiety in Women : research shows that lavender oil is just as effective as Xanax, Valium, or Prozac for signs of anxiety in women.

Lavender Oil is an Effective Non-Drug Alternative

Lavender is an herb that has been proven effective by leading researchers as a natural remedy for treating signs of anxiety. In a study published in the journal Phytomedicine, lavender oil was shown to be just as effective as the pharmaceutical drug lorazepam (Ativan). Furthermore, lavender oil showed no sedative effects (a common side effect of lorazepam) and it had no potential for drug abuse or dependence.[3] Other studies have confirmed the anti-anxiety properties of lavender as well as many other medicinal benefits:

  • Lavender helps with restlessness, nervousness and insomnia.[4,5]
  • Lavender helps with depression symptoms.[6,7]
  • Lavender can be used for painful and inflammatory conditions including migraines and joint pain.[8]
  • Lavender can help people who suffer from agitation related to dementia.[9,10]

How to Take Lavender Oil to Calm Nervousness and Other Signs of Anxiety

Lavender essential oil in liquid format, lavender leaves and lavender flowers are more readily available than capsules and can be added to bath water.  Six drops of lavender oil extract or 1/4 to 1/2 cup of dried lavender flowers may be added to bath water.  You can prepare lavender tea using 1 to 2 tbsp. of whole, dried flowers for each cup of boiling water. Steep for 10 to 15 minutes, and use a tea infuser or strain before drinking.

Precautions

Lavender used as aromatherapy or by mouth may increase the amount of drowsiness when taken in combination with pharmaceutical medications such as benzodiazepines (Xanax, Ativan, Valium), narcotics such as codeine, or certain antidepressants. If you are taking prescription medications, consultation with a healthcare practitioner is strongly advised.

Other Natural Remedies for Depression and Anxiety

The effects of stress on your mental and physical health are being studied more intensively these days. Anxiety can be considered a type of stress response, typically involving a sense of fear, dread, or apprehension. Emotional Freedom Technique or EFT can be very effective for reducing anxiety by correcting the bioelectrical short-circuiting that causes your body's reactions—without adverse effects. You can think of EFT as a tool for "reprogramming" your circuitry, and it works on both real and imagined stressors.

EFT is a form of psychological acupressure, based on the same energy meridians used in traditional acupuncture for more than 5,000 years to treat physical and emotional ailments, but without the invasiveness of needles. Following a 2012 review in the American Psychological Association's journal Review of General Psychology, EFT is moving closer to meeting the criteria for an "evidence-based treatment."

Recent research has shown that EFT significantly increases positive emotions, such as hope and enjoyment, and decreases negative emotional states, including anxiety. EFT is particularly powerful for treating stress and anxiety because it specifically targets your amygdala and hippocampus, which are the parts of your brain that help you decide whether or not something is a threat.

The Truth about Healing & Finding Happiness

Yoga, Spiritual Significance, Inspiring, Health Mind Happy SoulChloë RainComment
Knowing Yourself is the beginning of all Wisdom

Maybe you've been doing this self help, self development thing for a while? Maybe you've spent some time in therapy, read a book, or 150 books on taking the leap of faith and how to leverage the Universe to create happiness.

But none of it has worked.

But how many years did you build on the old foundation?

Might it take a little time to instill this new foundation of who you really are in this lifetime and how you desire to be, act, and feel?

There is no secret cure all pill, there is no magic 8 ball with all the answers. Happiness is a constant choice and state of being regardless of your external circumstances.  This may be difficult to grasp at first, but once you understand that you are your own source of wisdom, life challenges take on new meaning.

In going within you can discover the insight of the answer that you already know within your heart and body.

But no one can make you act on that awareness.

That is your choice and it is up to you to do the action.

You can learn what the Masters have taught for thousands of years and what thousands of people have practiced to reach happiness and fulfillment.

and.....

There is one truth.

Only you can know the truth, only you can act on the truth, only you can make the choice.

As we have new awareness, new experiences become available to us. As we have new awareness we realize new opportunities to make different choices.

Learning our own wisdom is the greatest gift and most effective tool to fix, heal, create and recreate our lives.

You can go to yoga class, you can be taught yoga, you can know the benefits of yogic practice, you can observe the changes that happen after years of practicing yoga.

but....

No one can make you do yoga.

Well, maybe there is one person.

You.

No one can make you have the benefits of yoga, unless you are the one engaging in the act of doing and being.

If I do yoga once a week, will I see some benefit? Maybe yes, maybe no.

Does this mean the teachings don't work and the teachers are lying to me?

If I practice yoga once a week for 10 years, 20 years, will I see the benefits of yoga?

What if I practice yoga everyday for 10 years, for 20 years? What do I imagine will happen then?

It always comes down to a choice. It is that simple and that complicated.

Awareness is the key to making a different choice. What you do with the awareness is what makes the difference.

You can sit at the feet of an Enlightened Master and be accepted as his student, and he can teach you Zen and the ways to enlightenment, but he cannot make you become enlightened.

That part you have to do on your own.

Everyone has to arrive on our own terms, by our own actions. This is the secret to enlightenment.

In creating a new daily practice based on your inner wisdom you are laying a new foundation for your life.

The most important journey you can ever take is from your head to your heart. It can be the most difficult and the longest, but once you get there you know who you are, and why you're here.

And that makes all the difference in the world.

Love and desire are the most powerful and creative forces in the Universe. We are made of Love and it is said that our desires are the keys to unlock our unique destiny.

The intention of this 21 Day course is to raise your vibration by releasing any lower energies of shame, guilt, unforgiveness, resentment, or attachment to any occurrence, event, person or persons, and furthermost Ourselves for any wrong doing, betrayal, or disappointment either real or otherwise imagined. To learn more.  Click HERE!

4 Easy Techniques To Boost Your Positivity

Give More Tuesdays, Health Mind Happy SoulChloë RainComment

1. Don't take yourself too seriously.

A good sense of humor has been found in studies to make you friendlier and sexier, says the "Scientific American"! Who doesn't want to feel happy and desirable?! Not really feeling it?? All you have to do is pretend to laugh, force a smile, or fake being amused.

Yes even faking it can make you sexier, faking a smile or amusement that is. Once you start "pretending" your body sends out signals that actually induce the chemical bath that creates the upward spiral of the happiness emotion. No joke! You can force a smile or even anticipate or imagine something funny and it will have the same positive benefits and chemical effects on your mood.

2. Take naps.

The benefits of making time for naps in your daily routine can be exponential! Naps not only boost your energy levels, research shows they increase your memory skills, your cognitive skills, and creativity. 20 minutes is all it takes, set your timer on your phone with a non-jarring alarm tone. I find that if I'm really struggling with a problem, taking a nap "on it" can help me have insightful breakthroughs and receive inspiration that I couldn't have received otherwise.

Naps have become instrumental in my problem resolution process. What happens if you nap for more than 20 minutes? Research shows longer naps help boost memory and enhance creativity. Napping for approximately 30 to 60 minutes -- is good for decision-making skills. Getting rapid eye movement or REM sleep, usually 60 to 90 minutes of napping, plays a key role in making new connections in the brain and solving creative problems. Napping is a great technique to quickly increase your energy during the day, reduce  stress and reset your mindset for positivity.

3. Calm your breathing.

One of my favorite techniques to calm my nerves and become instantly centered has to do with the observation of the breath.   Single nostril breathing is the best way to instantly center, become present, and reduce anxiety drastically.

Use your thumb and middle finger, hold your thumb to the right side of your nose and breath in and breath out through your left nostril. When you have completed one breath (both in and out) release your thumb from your right nostril and place your middle finger on your left nostril and complete one full in breath and out breath. You can use this technique anywhere anytime anxiety arises. Useful while driving!

4. Up your hug count or spend time cuddling to boost your positivity, reduce self-doubt, and banish procrastination.

Hug someone (even a stranger) or spend some time petting or snuggling your pet and boost your immune system. Reaching out and hugging releases endorphins dopamine and serotonin into the bloodstream, these chemicals are proven to reduce sadness, balance your nervous system, and boost your immune response.

Hugging for an extended time or cuddling with your pet instantly elevates serotonin levels that create feelings of happiness. Not to mention procrastination, self-doubt, and lack of enthusiasm are linked with low levels of dopamine and hugs are said to boost these levels. Dopamine is responsible for giving us that feel-good feeling, and it's also responsible for motivation! Go HUG somebody!!!

If you've never seen the "Free Hugs Campaign" Video before, I highly recommend you watch this video to boost your positivity right now. Smile....

Today I am done with Depression

Health Mind Happy Soul, InspiringChloë RainComment
untitled-79.jpg

Today is a really big day, and I'm about to make a scary announcement.  I wanted to post a really awesome picture, make a grand statement, tell a fantastic story, say something profound and get a 100 Facebook likes.... but today's awareness and my declaration are a big enough statement in themselves.

Today I am done with depression.

Today I am done with depression.

I have lived with depression, for as long as I can remember, the first time I attempted suicide I was in third grade. When I got my first high paying job out of college, and bought a bunch of grey suits on my credit card, I also started paying for therapy, as if it were a monthly utility.

After 10 years of therapy and a couple of different anti-depression cocktails later, I was ok. But I just couldn't shrug the depression.

I was still unhappy and unsatisfied despite all of my outward successes and accomplishments. How could this be? I had done everything right! I had followed all the rules, and I had done what I was supposed to.

I yearned, I longed, I desperately needed and wanted and desired REAL happiness.

But I didn't even know what that was.

My brains and gumption had gotten me this far, but there was one voice I had never listened to.... the voice of my Heart, my longing, my desire.  Something inside me knew the only thing to do was start listening to that voice inside that told me to try the scary things.... to move into real happiness there was only one voice I hadn't listened to, the soft voice leading me in to the scariest territory of my living life: My Heart.

My Heart told me to go to the Arctic Circle, and so I went. My Heart told me to move to Seattle, (my fears said No), but I went. Then My Heart started speaking up big time, and I have listened.

 Arctic Circle, Lofoten Islands, Norway

Arctic Circle, Lofoten Islands, Norway

I have explored deeply the inner endless caves of fear, disappointment, and hurt, and found that always the darkness could be lifted by self expression. Whether that means to express my fears, my sadness, or express myself creatively... the darkness is always lifted not by suppression but EXPRESSION.

Today I am done with depression, like an old worn out shirt that has become threadbare and soft, I used to wear it all the time, like a piece in my wardrobe that described me, was me, identified Me, as me.

I used to feel depression was just something that described who I am.

I'm 5'2", brown hair, hazel eyes, and have depression.

But now its just an outdated unstylish thing that no longer belongs to me. Depression no longer serves me, it doesn't belong to me, its not welcome in my home.

I did arrive here without drugs or medications, but with lots and lots of support, and a shit ton of inner work, exploration, and inquiry!  Sometimes sitting in the dark.

I will always remember this day, in my personal life history, as the day I realized I had been done with depression, and recognized that it was no longer my frame of reference that colored all things.

Things I know today: I like myself. I feel purposeful. I enjoy my life and I am happy to be alive.

I lead with my heart now, and that has made all the difference in the world.

My Heart said "I've got your back."
